How to File ITR: A Beginner’s Step-by-Step Guide

How to file ITR is a question that often overwhelms first-time taxpayers. Start by collecting all essential documents—Form 16 (for salaried), interest certificates, TDS certificates, and investment proofs. Then, log in to the Income Tax e-filing portal. Link your PAN with Aadhaar and ensure mobile/email verification is complete. Choose the correct ITR form based on your income type. Most salaried individuals will file ITR-1. Pre-filled data is available—cross-check it with your documents. Declare all income including savings account interest and capital gains. Claim deductions under sections like 80C, 80D, etc., and verify TDS entries. After submitting, verify the return using Aadhaar OTP, net banking, or physical dispatch. Keep the acknowledgement (ITR-V) safely.
